Search the address and the map lands on the property. Rural addresses that geocoders miss can be found by dropping straight onto the imagery instead.

    Draw the boundary over current imagery of the actual property. What you see is the cedar you're quoting, not a plat drawing from 1994.

    Area comes off the polygon with the same spherical-excess math PostGIS uses, rounded to two decimals. The figure that prices the job is derived from the shape, so it can't drift from what you drew.

    A tract is rarely one density. Split it, name each zone, and let the rate card price heavy and medium separately instead of averaging your margin away.

  • Stored figures, not recalculated ones

    A saved quote keeps its acreage even if the formula is tuned later — same reasoning as storing quote totals. Read-back revalidates the numbers against the geometry and refuses a map whose acreage disagrees.

    The largest zone's centroid gives the distance to site, so the travel charge is computed from where the work actually is rather than from a guess at the driveway.

Common questions.

How accurate is satellite takeoff acreage?

The area is computed geodesically from the polygon you trace, using the same approximation turf.js and PostGIS use — the error is negligible at parcel scale. The accuracy that matters is how carefully you trace the boundary, which is why you draw the work line rather than the parcel line.

Can I price different parts of a tract differently?

Yes — that's what zones are for. Trace the heavy cedar as one zone and the light brush as another, name them, and each prices at its own per-acre rate. A twelve-acre job that's eight heavy and four medium bids as exactly that.

Does the customer see the map?

Yes. The marked map rides on the quote they approve and the tracking portal they follow, and your crew opens the same drawing on the work link. Everyone is looking at one boundary.

Do I still need to walk the property?

For a lot of jobs, no — the takeoff is enough to quote from. Walk it when you need to see what imagery can't show you: ground conditions, access, what's actually under the canopy.
